In August 2021, large-scale wildfires raged across Greece. The island of Euboea and regions north of Athens were particularly hard hit. Entire landscapes burned down and thousands of people had to flee.
Countless livestock and pets were left behind in the fire zones or suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. In many places there was a shortage of veterinary care and of personnel to evacuate animals.
The ADRG deployed to Greece with responders and veterinary equipment and worked closely with local helpers.
The deployment demonstrated how valuable rapid cross-border help is for animals in large-scale disaster situations.
