The Emergency
On 6 February 2023, two severe earthquakes struck south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria. Entire towns were levelled and tens of thousands of buildings collapsed. Trapped in the rubble were not only people but countless domestic, farm and livestock animals, separated from their families.
The surviving animals spent days without water, food or protection from the winter cold. Given the scale of the disaster, there was a shortage of personnel and specialist equipment on site to locate animals and recover them from the rubble.
Our Deployment
The ADRG deployed to Hatay province with responders, locating technology and veterinary equipment. Together with international rescue teams and local authorities, the teams searched collapsed buildings and freed buried animals.
- Locating and recovering buried animals from collapsed buildings together with international teams.
- Emergency veterinary care for injuries, hypothermia and dehydration directly on site.
- Supplying free-roaming and abandoned animals with water, food and emergency shelter.
- Reuniting rescued animals with their families and handing them over to local animal-welfare structures.
The deployment once again showed how quickly the personnel and resources pooled within the Bundesverband can help over great distances wherever animals are in distress.
